Questions For Engaging SehrSweeney

  1. I would say this connects with Scheuer and the beginning of his article when he talks about how the public has been acting towards a liberal education because of what Sehrsweeney is saying. I believe universities play a significant role in educating students on what they choose to educate them on, they also determine the direction the student decides to take in life, therefore having a lot of influence on students. This is essentially something I have been aware of due to our University pushing climate change in every subject currently, showing us they could influence a lot of good if need be.
  1. I believe what he means by “climate justice” over other societal issues is that the environment kind of determines if you will even have those issues. Essentially, with no earth, you won’t be around to argue about other things, so we need to make “justice” for our environment priority number one right now. By “justice” they mean it in a way that is no different than justice for anything else, except in this context it’s for our environment that we have wrongfully destroyed over the years, therefore we are responsible for fixing it.
  1. In the beginning of paragraph 2 on page 8 Sehrsweeney uses the Universities themselves as naysayers against change within their campuses because of the amount of money it would cost. However, Sehrsweeney explains that not different from anything else that saves you money, it’s going to cost money first, but in the long run it pays out. Which to me made his argument way more compelling than it already was, because I’d say he had a solid point, why aren’t universities taking action at the ideal time to take action?
  1. On page 6 in the first paragraph Sehrsweeney begins discussing how we need to start taking “higher education” seriously and he is explaining it in a way that sounds like Scheuer is saying it. This is due to the fact it sounds like Sehrsweeney wants us to pursue a “liberal education” with the “cross cutting” of climate change in every subject like Nugent says. However, should students with money to pursue a higher education be the only ones responsible for fixing the decay of our environment?
